Residential concrete slab planning
Start with what the slab must support. A patio pad and a structural foundation are different design problems.

Describe the intended load
Explain the proposed use, dimensions and anything that will be attached or placed on the slab. Provide equipment or structure specifications where available. Do not choose slab thickness or reinforcement from a generic calculator; the site and loads govern the design.
Separate design from installation
Ask whether an engineered design, permit documents or inspections are needed and who provides them. An installation quote should say whether these services are included or separately arranged. Do not treat a contractor estimate as engineering approval.
Coordinate work beneath the surface
Identify planned utilities, conduits, drainage and other items that must be resolved before the pour. Confirm the correct utility-marking and excavation process with the parties responsible for the site. A late change can affect the sequence and the price.
Agree preparation and curing scope
Ask how the base will be prepared, how dimensions and levels will be checked and what protection is required while the concrete cures. Keep the proposed use out of service until the contractor provides appropriate written instructions.
Cost, timing and exclusions to clarify
A slab quote depends on its intended load and use, engineering where needed, excavation, access, utilities and preparation. Ask whether design, reinforcement, inspections and associated building work are included. Confirm inspection stages before placement and curing requirements before loading. Foundations, structural repairs and commercial engineering are not represented as included in this residential planning scope.
Use the estimate comparison checklist and prepare your project questions.
